MB Energy and Metafuels have entered a collaboration aimed at moving certified synthetic sustainable aviation fuel, or e-SAF, from production through delivery to aircraft, strengthening the European e-SAF supply chain.

The agreements were signed at the opening of Metafuels’ demonstration plant in Switzerland and are intended to support development of a resilient and independent supply chain beginning with Metafuels’ Turbe project in Rotterdam, which is scheduled to launch in 2030.

The companies will work together on market access, blending, infrastructure and logistics, including certification and information flow needed to deploy e-SAF. The collaboration is designed to address infrastructure gaps and develop solutions for moving fuel from production facilities to aircraft.

Under a proposed methanol arrangement, MB Energy also could supply methanol feedstock for Metafuels’ production process.

Metafuels’ technology converts methanol produced from renewable feedstocks into aviation fuel. The collaboration is part of the company’s broader effort to develop the supply chain needed ahead of the Turbe project’s launch. Metafuels said the supply chain is intended to be independent and resilient to global events that could affect sustainable aviation fuel supplies, with partnerships spanning feedstock, logistics and fuel delivery.

MB Energy will contribute its capabilities in global trading, logistics, infrastructure and certification as the companies work to develop and scale new e-SAF supply pathways.

The companies said large-scale adoption of synthetic aviation fuel will require regulatory certainty as well as end-to-end infrastructure and transportation solutions capable of delivering blended and certified e-SAF to aircraft.

Metafuels recently opened what it described as the world’s first methanol-to-jet demonstration facility, marking a step toward scaling its technology from demonstration to industrial production. The company said its partnership with MB Energy will help address supply chain requirements as it works to bring e-SAF to market.
