Bayer and Neste have finalized a commercial agreement to jointly scale Bayer’s newgold winter canola, with the goal of expanding winter canola acreage in the Southern Great Plains and increasing the supply of lower-carbon-intensity feedstocks for biofuels.
The collaboration is intended to strengthen the oilseed supply chain for renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel as global demand for biofuels is projected to nearly triple to approximately 40 billion gallons by 2040. The high-protein meal produced from winter canola also will be marketed to the animal feed industry, providing an additional feed source for dairy and beef cattle, poultry and swine.
Bayer and Neste are establishing a newgold winter canola network with additional value chain partners to support acreage expansion and provide farmers with an additional market for their crops.
Bayer plans to launch newgold winter canola hybrids in fall 2027. The hybrids will feature winter hardiness, TruFlex, Bayer’s second-generation Roundup Ready trait technology, and pod-shatter resistance technology. The traits are intended to support yield performance and higher oil content.
The newgold winter canola hybrids are being developed as a potential rotational crop with wheat and an additional profit opportunity for farmers in the Southern Great Plains. Bayer said the crop will give growers flexibility in determining how and where winter canola fits into their operations.
The companies said expanding winter canola production could help increase the availability of renewable feedstocks while improving land utilization and providing farmers with additional income opportunities.
Biofuels can be produced from renewable organic materials including corn, soybeans, canola and intermediate oilseed crops such as winter canola. Bayer recently highlighted its biofuels platform at its investor day in Huxley, Iowa, including its portfolio of intermediate biofuel crops such as camelina, winter canola and CoverCress.
