Topsoe and Sasol have signed a single point licensing agreement with Canadian sustainable aviation fuel developer SUSTAERO to provide integrated technology for a new biomass-to-liquids production facility.
Under the agreement, Topsoe and Sasol will supply their gas-to-liquid synfuels technology, combining Topsoe's hydrogen production, gas reforming and hydroprocessing technologies with Sasol's Fischer-Tropsch and treatment technologies.
When fully operational, the facility is expected to produce 3,200 barrels per day of sustainable aviation fuel, with the potential to expand production to three times its initial capacity.
The companies said the agreement reflects increasing demand for commercially proven technologies that can support the expansion of sustainable aviation fuel production while strengthening energy security through more diverse fuel sources.
SUSTAERO plans to integrate the technologies into its Syngas Optimization for Aviation Renewables architecture to support production of low-carbon aviation fuel from sustainable feedstocks.
The project comes as global demand for sustainable aviation fuel continues to grow. According to the International Air Transport Association, global SAF production is expected to reach 1.9 million metric tons, nearly double the 1 million metric tons produced in 2024. Even at that level, SAF would account for only about 0.6% of total global jet fuel production.
The International Energy Agency's Net Zero Scenario estimates that more than 10% of aviation fuel consumption will need to come from sustainable aviation fuel by 2030 to remain on a pathway toward net zero emissions by 2050.
