U.S. Senate Democratic Whip Dick Durbin visited Incobrasa Industries on May 29 to meet with Illinois soybean farmers, Illinois Soybean Association representatives and company leadership to discuss the role of biofuels and issues affecting the industry.
During the visit, Durbin learned about Incobrasa's investments in Illinois and participated in discussions about biodiesel's contribution to soybean demand, rural economic development, domestic energy production and markets for Illinois-grown soybeans.
Participants also addressed federal policies affecting the biofuels sector and emphasized the importance of a stable policy environment to support future industry growth and investment.
“Illinois soybean farmers rely on strong domestic markets, and biofuels continue to be one of the most important success stories for our industry,” said Kevin Johnson, director of government relations and strategy for ISA. “We appreciate Senator Durbin taking the time to hear directly from farmers and industry leaders about the opportunities and challenges facing biofuels today. His continued engagement on these issues helps ensure Illinois remains a leader in renewable fuels, agricultural innovation and rural economic development.”
Incobrasa Industries is among several Illinois companies that process soybean oil into biodiesel, creating additional demand for soybeans while supporting employment and economic activity in rural communities. Soybean oil remains a primary feedstock for biodiesel production, providing value-added opportunities for growers and contributing to the production of domestic renewable fuels.
Durbin said the visit provided an opportunity to hear directly from industry stakeholders about conditions facing farmers and the broader agricultural economy.
“I appreciated the opportunity to hear directly from representatives of the Illinois Soybean Association and Incobrasa Industries about the challenges our farmers face with biofuels and the wider farm economy,” Durbin said. “At a time with high energy prices, we should be embracing domestic production of biofuels. Illinois farmers face enough challenges from chaotic tariffs and foreign policy decisions that cause skyrocketing costs for diesel and fertilizer. I will continue to work with my Senate colleagues to restore some common sense back into policies that impact the farm economy.”
According to ISA, the visit was part of ongoing efforts to inform federal policymakers about issues affecting Illinois soybean farmers, including biofuel policy, agricultural competitiveness and economic opportunities for rural communities.
