Authorities are investigating after a man died at an ethanol production facility near Plainview on Saturday.

Around 10 a.m., Pierce County 911 received a call reporting a person passed out in a fermenting tank at the Husker Ag ethanol production facility east of Plainview, said Pierce County Attorney Ted Lohrberg in a press release.

Plainview Fire and Rescue and the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the scene. First responders’ attempts to resuscitate the man, identified as 31-year-old Randall McElroy of Cushing, Oklahoma, were unsuccessful. McElroy was pronounced dead at the scene, Lohrberg said.

The county attorney said an autopsy was ordered and the death remains under investigation.

A statement from Husker Ag said fermenters at Husker Ag’s production facility were being rebuilt when the incident occurred.

“First and foremost, our deepest sympathies go out to the victim’s family, friends and colleagues during this very difficult time,” according to the company’s statement. “Safety is our highest priority, and we are cooperating fully with local authorities as they investigate the circumstances of this incident.

“We remain committed to the health and safety of everyone who works at or visits our production facility, and we will continue to uphold that commitment with the utmost seriousness.”
